China Unicom, one of China’s largest communication service providers, is now building what it describes as “its biggest DDoS protection and mitigation system ever”. China Unicom is working in partnership with Taiwan-based security provider Genie Networks to deploy GenieATM systems on China Unicom’s domestic backbone to carry out the ambitious project.
The two companies are collaborating to develop the DDoS system, which will both protect China Unicom’s own backbone network and offer DDoS protection services for its customers to purchase. Its customer size is substantial: 77 million broadband service subscribers and 287 million mobile service subscribers.
China Unicom says that it provides superior secure networking and excellent network performance, however, it has found that DDoS attacks are becoming harder to manage.
More devices connected to the Internet of Things (IoT), increased speed of network traffic and ever-evolving attack techniques are creating the need for advanced DDoS protection that is able to process network traffic to identify and mitigate threats in real time.
“With an ever-evolving attack landscape, China Unicom takes cyber security issues seriously,” said Mr. Lu, the technical director of China Unicom’s Network Security Operations Center.
China Unicom underwent a network infrastructure upgrade last year and has now adopted over 100 GenieATM systems developed by Genie Networks in its backbone to build a carrier-level DDoS detection and defense system. According to China Unicom, the GenieATM deployment will monitor traffic information from hundreds of its backbone routers, support identification and analysis of Tera bps traffic, in addition to enabling traffic scrubbing, and delivering a user self-service portal for traffic and incident intelligence.
Genie Networks says the new deployment will protects China Unicom’s network from DDoS attacks while also adding value-added security services for the use of its subscribers.
“With the scale of the network infrastructure, the magnitude of monitored traffic, and the capacity of attack detection and scrubbing, the China Unicom’s DDoS protection deployment is one of the largest in the world,” the company said.
“By teaming up with Genie and leveraging its GenieATM solution, we are in a great position to safeguard our network operations as well as offer security services to benefit our customers. In the future, we’d be delighted to have more opportunities in working with Genie on cyber traffic intelligence and security,” Lu concludes.
Genie Networks has offices in Beijing, Shanghai, Tokyo, and Singapore; and has just opened a new office in Mumbai, India, continuing its push into the Asia Pacific region. The company says its India office emphasises its decision to increase its APAC presence, and highlights robust customer demand for network-wide visibility into data traffic and its managed security services business.
Genie’s customers include enterprises, government organizations, universities, and communication service providers.
